End of the sit-in in London

This is the beginning of our fight!

The first stage of a campaign called “Life without Fear” which has started two months ago by the International Federation of Iranian Refugees in protest against the British government’s asylum policies, ended on 29th March 2006 with a three days sit-in, in front of the Parliament.

In the third day of the sit-in, asylum seekers announced that, asylum is a human right, British government must stop deportation and must close the immigration detention centers and must grant refused asylum seekers leave to remain in this country immediately.

In this day, famous individuals who support asylum rights came to this sit-in and gave their support to the asylum seekers. Among which, Peter Tatchell from Outrage and Maryam Namazie the former director of the International Federation of Iranian Refugees and a well known supporter of asylum rights gave speeches. A music group called ‘Rhythms of Resistance’ was also presented and created a passionate and exciting environment for the sit-in.  Activists of an organisation called ‘No Border’ also joined the sit-in to show their solidarity and support for the asylum seekers’ demands.

At the End, Siamak Amjadi, the director of Federation in UK, thanked the participants. He stated “the sit-in and this stage of our campaign for ‘Life without Fear’ will finish today, but our work and our struggle is just beginning. We are not going to give up until we get our human and asylum right”.

A resolution, which was voted for by the participants the day before, was signed by them and a copy of it was sent to the British parliament.

The Iranian asylum seekers’ three days sit-in ended in an environment of unity and solidarity with the promise that they will carry on their just and humanitarian fight. These days will surely remain as three days of passionate and exciting days in the history of Iranian asylum seekers in Britain.

The International Federation of Iranian Refugees would like to thank all the organisations which have supported this campaign including Campaign against Fascism and Racism in UK, Outrage, No Border- London, Refugees First, Worker-communist party of Iran, International Committee against Stoning, Communist Youth Organization, International Committee against Execution and specially the “International solidarity with Iranian students” which supported the campaign and provided food for the participants of these three days of sit-in.
