A moving
letter from TIPF
The US forces at TIPF: How are they treating the Iranian refugees?
By: Ali Afarinandeh
I want to tell you in a very concise way, what has happened to few
of my friends and me in the past month at TIPF. On November 24,
2006, I was detained by the military authorities of TIPF and put in
solitary confinement. Why? No reason. Absolutely no explanation has
been given to me until today. After a while some of my friends were
also brought to solitary confinement. Solders started to treat us
harshly. One of the examples is the day when they entered and pepper
sprayed us. It happened without any reason and they emptied a
capsule of pepper gas on us in such a way that our eyes, nose and
throat burned. We couldn’t see anything and were only groaning and
jumping up and down. They sprayed the whole capsule on us, and
stopped spraying only when they started coughing themselves. So they
threw themselves out of the isolation cell. A at this point one of
us started to become severely short of breath and lied on the
ground. He had asthma. After that spraying and tolerating a lot of
shouting, intimidation and disrespect, we were of course condemned
and were the guilty ones!
Again after being 25 days in isolation, on Dec 19, 2006, early in
the morning, the door of isolation was opened and 20-30 soldiers
entered the cell and put handcuffs on me and again without any
explanation and with a harsh and inhuman attitude took me to a new
isolation cell. They had a camera with them. When I asked why you
are treating me like this, they answered: “Shot up terrorist” and
started pressing on my shoulders, elbows and hands. My other friends
were also brought simultaneously and I could hear their voices
behind myself. One of my friends asked Major Frita: “Why are you
doing this to us”? Major Frita answered: “When our operation is
finish you will know”. Imagine after being 3.5 years of being under
the protection of the American military forces, while being
recognized as a refugee based on International Laws, you see
American solders executing an “operation” on you: Moving bunch of
helpless and hand-cuffed refugees from one isolation to another
isolation is considered an “operation” here! It is truly ridiculous!
These solders have such a low level of knowledge and culture that
they can not figure out who is the enemy and who is not. After few
years of looking after Ben Laden and not being able to catch him,
while their war machinery is sinking, they have zoomed on bunch of
poor forgotten refugees, victims of Khomeini’s regime and Rajavi’s
organization, helpless people who are so-called under the protection
of all International laws. What a shame! They are unable to find the
culprit therefore they have concentrated their effort on oppressing
the most vulnerable ones and calling this an “operation”!
It is worth mentioning that the commander of these solders is a
woman called Curry, who is the stage-manager of all these behaviors
and attitudes. She has no knowledge of laws and regulations and acts
as she likes.
After throwing us in the new isolation, solders stormed into our
tents, looting all our personal belongings, cash, necklace …etc.
Believe me: we had worked in 50 – 60 Degree Celsius for them to earn
one dollar/hour (Iraqi rate) to buy our needs, like TV,
satellite…etc. The Americans paid us in Iraqi rate but sold us the
equipment in American rate. All of that was stolen by solders that
had of course order from their commanders.
And now it is cold at TIPF and we are trembling the whole night.
When we ask for heat, they do not even listen to us. It is like we
are not human beings. I only have had two showers since my
imprisonment. I have wounds on my wrists due to the hand-cuffs. I
still feel the pepper spray in my throat and I have shortness of
breath. But worse than anything are the intimidations and
disrespects and harsh attitudes that are pounding on my heart. I
have grudge in my throat, in this empty desert, anxious, with a soul
that is exploding, I am crying and my shout is kept in my chest.
Dear friends, if you can, please let the lawyers without border or
other human rights organization know about us. Maybe they can do
something legally. Explain them our situation and ask to put a
complaint against people who are harming us for no reason, who are
breaking the law and doing injustice. These events are from one
month ago. You can imagine yourself the rest of this story.
With my very best regards
Ali Afarinandeh
